We have planned a fun, interactive, and educational event for incoming University of Iowa students who are interested in learning more about arts and entertainment opportunities at the University of Iowa. During one day of Welcome Week, the IMU will be filled with performances, presentations, and interactive activities hosted by the following departments at the University of Iowa: Art and Art History; Cinema & Comparative Literature; Dance; Music; Theatre Arts; and the Performing Arts Divisions of Dance, Music, Performing Arts Entrepreneurship, and Theatre Arts. Each department will be allotted one hour (see schedule below), fifteen minutes of which may consist of a short performance and/or presentation. During the remaining forty-five minutes, each department will organize an activity that encourages audience participation, such as an informal dance class with the Dance Department or an improve exercise with the Theatre Arts Department. Students are free to come and go throughout the day, depending on their interests.
In the middle of the day, we will have a lunch break during which Papa Johns will deliver a variety of pizzas free of charge to event attendees. While enjoying their lunch, attendees may browse displays set up by the many arts and entertainment student organizations to learn more about student opportunities to further get involved in the arts.
It is our hope that this event will encourage incoming students to make new friends, have fun, get involved with student groups, and discover the arts and entertainment opportunities throughout the University. Although the event will be open to the entire University community, the target audience will be incoming students who have expressed interests in arts and entertainment on their applications and/or surveys conducted by the University. We anticipate participation by approximately 300 incoming University of Iowa students throughout the day.
